Searching through seed catalogues can get a touch tiresome, after all not many varieties successfully pair the heat with good looks. Basket of Fire gets away with just that. Basket of Fire is a bushy yet compact variety that makes a great centrepiece either in the house or outside in a hanging basket. Rated at around 80,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) if you’re just after a variety with the sort of heat that’ll impress but not blow everyone away, then Basket of Fire scores well there too.
These plants are very productive baring small, hot chillies that mature from a deep purple through yellow and orange to a bright shade of scarlet red and making a beautiful display. Plants show good tolerance to cool weather and will continue to fruit outside well into the autumn, and even longer under glass.
Basket of Fire fruit is thin skinned making it easy to dry. Once harvested, a few hours in full sun will preserve the fruit for a rainy day when plants in fruit are a distant memory. An interesting choice for making chilli flakes.
